The author deals with the Cauchy problem for the following fifth-order shallow water equation \[ \begin{gathered} \partial_t u+\alpha\partial^5_x u+\beta\partial^3_x u+ \gamma\partial_x u+ \mu\partial_x(u^2)= 0,\quad x,t\in\mathbb{R},\\ u(x,0)= u_0(x),\end{gathered}\tag{1} \] where \(\alpha\leq 0\), \(\beta\) and \(\gamma\) are real constants and \(\mu\) is complex constant. The author proves that the Cauchy problem (1) is locally well-posed for data in \(H^2\) \((s\geq -3/8)\) by the Fourier restriction norm method and the contraction mapping principle.
