    The authors consider iterated maps of dimension \(n \geq 2\) having a reflection symmetry, occurring two types of bifurcations from a symmetric fixed point: (i) a period-doubling and (ii) symmetry-breaking bifurcation. In two-parameter systems there two types bifurcation can be made to conclude, giving rise to a mode interaction, which is studied in this article. By reformulation the period-doubling bifurcation as a symmetry-breaking one two bifurcation equations with \(Z_2\times Z_2\) symmetry are derived together with subsequent local analysis of solutions, including the derivation of conditions for a tertiary Hopf bifurcation. Two applications of the obtained results are given.
