This paper on pair correlations in dynamical systems begins with a dynamical system \({\mathcal J}:{\mathcal M}\to {\mathcal M}\) for some appropriate configuration space \({\mathcal M}\) with invariant measure \(\mu\). Measurable functions \(f:{\mathcal M}\to\mathbb{C}\) are called observables, and their averages are \(\langle f\rangle =\int_{{\mathcal M}} fd\mu\). Such a dynamical system is called mixing if \(\lim_{n\to\infty}\langle f\cdot g\circ{\mathcal J}\rangle= \langle f\rangle\langle g\rangle\) for all \(f,g\in L^2(\mu)\). For a mixing system, a bound on pair correlation means that the inequality \[ |\langle f\cdot g\circ{\mathcal J}^n\rangle-\langle f\rangle\langle g\rangle|\leq c_{f,g} r_{f,g}(n) \] holds, where \(f\) and \(g\) belong to suitable classes of observables, \(c_{f,g}\) is a constant depending on \(f\) and \(g\), and \(r_{f,g}(n)\) is a rate constant with \(r_{f,g}(n)\to 0\) as \(n\to\infty\), depending on \(f\) and \(g\). It is an open question whether fast decay of pair correlation implies a central limit theorem for sums of the form \[ S_n= \sum^{n-1}_{i=0} f\circ{\mathcal J}^i, \] where \(f\) is real-valued. The author explores this question in few special cases. These include Sinai billiards and transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms in any dimension. In all the special cases, strong pair correlation does imply an appropriate central limit theorem.
