Let \(q\) be a prime power, let \(k=\mathbb{F}_q(t)\) be the rational function field with the constant field \(\mathbb{F}_q\) and let \(K=k(\alpha)\) be the Artin-Schreier extension of \(k\) defined by the equation \(\alpha^p-\alpha=D,\) where \(D\in k.\) Let \(G=\text{Gal}(K/k),\) let \(Cl(K)\) be the ideal class group of the integral closure of \(\mathbb{F}_q[t]\) in \(K\) and let \(G(K)\) be the genus field of \(K\) that is the maximal abelian extension of \(K\) in the Hilbert class field of \(K\) which is the composite of \(K\) and some abelian extension of \(k.\) The authors give an explicit set of generators of the ambiguous ideal class group \(Cl(K)^G\) and find the dimension of \(Cl(K)^G\) as a vector space over \(\mathbb{F}_p\) in terms of the rational function \(D.\) As a corollary they provide a set of generators for the genus field \(G(K)/k.\) Using these results they are able to provide some information on the \(p\)-part of \(Cl(K)\) obtaining an analogue of the Rédei--Reichardt 4-rank formula for narrow ideal class groups of quadratic number fields.
