The present paper gives partial support to the still open Goldberg conjecture [\textit{S. I. Goldberg}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 21, 96--100 (1969; Zbl 0174.25002)] that on a compact symplectic manifold \((M^{2n}, \omega)\) any Einstein \(\omega\)-compatible metric \(g\) is Kähler Einstein, where compatibility means that the endomorphism \(J\) defined by \(\omega(\, , \, )=g(J \, , \, )\) is an almost complex structure. Given a symplectic form \(\omega\) on a compact manifold \(M^{2n}\), the space of almost Kähler metrics \(g\) compatible with \(\omega\) is infinite dimensional and contractible. Then, the Chern classes \(c_k\) are independent of the choice of a compatible almost complex structure. In the present paper the author proves that the existence of an Einstein \(\omega\)-compatible metric imposes some inequalities between the symplectic Chern numbers \((c_1 \vee [\omega]^{n - 1}) (M)\) and \((c_1^2 \vee [\omega]^{n - 2}) (M)\), which are not satisfied by all symplectic manifolds. Moreover, he gives some examples of symplectic manifolds which do not satisfy these conditions and therefore cannot admit compatible Einstein metrics.
