Let \(N=(N,J,h)\) be a complete Kähler manifold. The authors introduce a class of 1-parameter flows into \(N\) which are the natural generalization of some physical and mechanical models that give the motion equivalent of the vortex filament, the complex-valued mKdV equations, derivative non-linear Schrödinger equations, etc. Local and global existence results are established. Consider the Cauchy problem: \[ u_t=\alpha J_u\nabla_xu_x+\beta(\nabla_x^2u_x+{1\over 2}R(u_x,J_uu_x)J_uu_x),\;x\in S^1\tag{*} \] with initial condition \(u(x,0)=u_0(x)\) where \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\) are positive real constants. The authors show: \smallbreak {Theorem:} Let \(N\) be a complete Kähler manifold. Let \(k\geq4\). \smallbreak (1) A local solution \(u\in L^\infty([0,T],H^k(S^1,N))\) of (*) with the initial map \(u_0\in H^k(S^1,N)\) is unique and \(u\) in \(C[(0,T],H^k(S^1,N))\). \smallbreak (2) If \(N\) is non-compact, the Cauchy problem (*) with \(u_0\in H^k(S^1,N)\) admits a unique local solution \(u\) in \(C([0,T],H^k(S^1,N))\) where \(T=T(N,||u_0||_{H^4})\). \smallbreak (3) If \(u_0\in H^3(S^1,N)\) and if \(|\nabla^\ell R|\leq B_\ell\) for \(\ell=0,1,2,3\), then (*) admits a local solution \(u\) in \(L^\infty([0,T]\), \(H^{3}(S^{1},N))\) where \(T=T(N,||u_0||_{H^{3}})\). (4) If \(N\) is a complete locally Hermitian symmetric space satisfying \(h(R(Y,X)X,R(X,JX)JX)\equiv0\), then (*) with \(u_{0}\in H^{k}(S^{1},N)\) admits a unique global solution \(u\in C([0,\infty),H^{k}(S^{1},N))\). The authors use the geometric energy method.
