In the theory of groups, there is the classical result due to Jordan, Burnside, and Dickson stating that if \(K\) is a field, \(n\ge 3\) is an integer, and \(G\) is a non-central normal subgroup of the general linear group \(\mathrm{GL}(n, K)\) then \(G\) contains the special linear group \(\mathrm{SL}(n, K)\). \textit{J. Dieudonné} [Bull. Soc. Math. Fr. 71, 27--45 (1943; Zbl 0028.33904)] showed that this famous result remains also true if \(K\) is replaced by any non-commutative division ring \(D\). Let \(V\) be a right vector space of any infinite cardinality dimension over a division ring \(D\). \textit{A. Rosenberg} described the normal subgroups of \(\mathrm{GL}(V)\), the group of all invertible linear transformations of \(V\), in [Ann. Math. (2) 68, 278--294 (1958; Zbl 0128.25501)]. However, as it was remarked in the article under review, the proof of some facts in Rosenberg's paper is incomplete. In this article, the authors fill this gap for countably dimensional \(V\) by giving the description of the lattice of normal subgroups in the group of infinite column-finite matrices indexed by positive integers over any field.
