The paper gives an overview of the construction principles of radial basis functions (RBFs) with global and local supports including very recent results on the construction of RBFs on manifolds and their properties. The main part of the survey paper is devoted to the use of RBFs for solving partial differential equations (PDEs), in particular, for construction particular solution of certain PDEs. The application of RBFs to time-dependent problems is also considered. Finally, the authors discuss the use of RBFs in the domain-boundary method and for the solution of boundary integral equations. The bibliography provides 70 references.
