This paper deals with a general matrix extension problem with structural constraints and provides a recursive solution in terms of an inverse scattering experiment. Both the stationary and nonstationary cases are considered, in addition to connections to tensor algebra. In Section 2, the authors investigate the application of the aforementioned generalized Schur algorithm to new matrix extension problems, and to certain structured matrix inequalities. In Section 3, the authors extend the results of the earlier sections to time-variant structured matrices and, therefore, to time-variant systems and cascades.
