The author considers the Iwahori-Hecke algebra \(H(\tilde G)\) associated with a metaplectic cover \(\tilde G\) of degree n of \(G(F)\) where G is a reductive split algebraic group defined over the local field F. It is assumed that n is coprime to the residual characteristic of F, and that F is non-archimedean. He describes this algebra in terms of generators and relations following the well-known construction of Iwahori and Matsumoto. The construction of \(\tilde G\) is essentially determined by a bilinear form on the lattice of one-parameter subgroups of a maximal split torus of G. The author shows how to use the root datum of G and this bilinear form to construct a new split reductive algebraic group \(G'\) so that \(H(\tilde G)\) is isomorphic to \(H(G')\), the usual Iwahori-Hecke algebra associated with \(G'\). As the Iwahori-Hecke algebra determines the composition series of unramified principal series representations this implies a `Shimura correspondence' between the factors of unramified principal series representations of G and of G'. In general G' is not isomorphic to G. This strongly suggests the general form of the Shimura correspondence, and answers a question of Piatetski-Shapiro who remarked that in general one should not expect a Shimura correspondence between representations of \(\tilde G\) and those of G, and asked for a construction of a group with the properties which G' as constructed in this paper has.
