An example of a semisimple Hopf algebra of dimension 36 which is not group-theoretical was given by \textit{D. Nikshych} [Sel. Math., New Ser. 14, No. 1, 145-161 (2008; Zbl 1177.16019)]. In the present paper, the structure of Hopf algebras that admit an extension of a group algebra by the cyclic group of order 2 is studied. The corepresentation theory of such Hopf algebras is investigated, extending a result of \textit{D. Tambara} [Isr. J. Math. 118, 29-60 (2000; Zbl 0969.18007)]. As a consequence, it is shown that every semisimple Hopf algebra of dimension \(<36\) is necessarily group-theoretical, so 36 is the smallest possible dimension where a non group-theoretical example occurs.
