Let \(X\) be a Fano manifold of dimension \(n-1\) defined over the complex numbers. Given a natural number \(m\) one defines the \(m\)-th global log-canonical threshold \(\mathrm{lct}_m(X)\) as the infimum of the log-canonical thresholds for the pairs \((X, \frac{1}{m}H)\) where \(H\) is an arbitrary divisor in \(|-m K_X|\). The global log-canonical threshold \(\mathrm{lct}(X)\) is the infimum of \(\mathrm{lct}_m(X)\) with \(m \in \mathbb N\) arbitrary. The log canonical threshold encodes some interesting information of the Fano manifold \(X\), for example when \(\mathrm{lct}(X) > \frac{n-1}{n}\), then \(X\) admits a Kähler-Einstein metric. In the paper under review the authors consider general hypersurfaces in \(\mathbb P^n\). By a theorem of \textit{A. V. Pukhlikov} [Izv. Math. 69, No. 6, 1225--1255 (2005); translation from Izv. Ross. Akad. Nauk, Ser. Mat. 69, No. 6, 153--186 (2005; Zbl 1119.14011)] the log-canonical threshold of a general hypersurface of degree \(n\) in \(\mathbb P^n\) is equal to \(1\) if \(n \geq 6\) and the same result is expected to hold for \(n=4\) and \(5\). The authors obtain a partial result in this direction by proving that for a general quartic of arbitrary dimension we have \(\mathrm{lct}(X) \geq \frac{7}{9}\) and for a general quintic \(\mathrm{lct}(X) \geq \frac{5}{6}\). Although this bound is weaker than the expected result it is sufficient to imply the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics for general quartic threefolds and general quintic fourfolds.
