Riemannian maps between Riemannian manifolds were introduced by \textit{A. E. Fischer} [Contemp. Math. 132, 331--366 (1992; Zbl 0780.53033)] to generalise Riemannian submersions and isometric immersions. In this paper the authors use standard Riemannian geometry techniques to study conformal slant Riemannian maps and umbilical conformal slant Riemannian maps from nearly Kähler manifolds to Riemannian manifolds. The class of nearly Kähler manifolds is chosen as it is claimed to be the most important and interesting one among the \(16\) classes of almost Hermitian geometries (see [\textit{A. Gray} and \textit{L. M. Hervella}, Ann. Mat. Pura Appl. (4) 123, 35--58 (1980; Zbl 0444.53032)]). Characterisations of Riemannian harmonic maps are derived, and several technical results are given. Also, conformal slant Riemannian maps with totally umbilical fibres are studied. The presentation includes a number of explicit examples of conformal slant Riemannian maps with source space a nearly Kähler manifold, in particular the round six-sphere with its standard nearly Kähler structure.
