This paper studies optimal control of a delayed alcoholism model with saturated treatment. The system consists of moderate and occasional drinkers, heavy drinkers, drinkers in treatment and drinkers recovered temporarily. It is assumed that the population growth in moderate and occasional drinkers individuals is governed by the logistic growth with a positive carrying capacity and positive intrinsic birth rate constant. The paper explores the way to optimally control the spread of alcoholism with awareness campaigns while the cost of implementing these interventions is minimized during a given time period. The Pontryagin's maximum principle with delay is used to formulate the optimal control problem. Some numerical simulation results are presented to illustrate the theory.
