The authors discuss the regularity of functions \(u:\Omega \to \mathbb{R}^k\), positive in every component, which are solutions to equations \[ Lu = f(u)-\beta g(u). \] The domain \(\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^N\) is neither necessarily bounded, nor smooth. The operator \(L\) is a diagonal linear elliptic operator, and \(f\) is a diagonal cubic nonlinearity in the Gross-Pitaevskii case, or quadratic in the Lotka-Volterra case. The coupling term \(g\) is correspondingly cubic, or quadratic. In both situations, the main theorems of the paper establish uniform bounds on weak solutions and on their gradients, on compact sub-domains of \(\Omega\), as the competition parameter \(\beta\) tends to infinity. Qualitative properties of limits of solutions \(u_\beta\), as \(\beta\) tends to infinity, are also given.
