Using a new method, different types of estimates for functionals are obtained. The main tools to deduce these estimates are the divided differences, the Steklov means, the powers of operators, the moduli of continuity of different orders and the quantities of the form \(N_P(\Phi,U)=\sup_{f\in\mathcal{N}}(\Phi(f)/P(U(f))\), where \((\mathcal{M},P)\) is a normed space, \(U:\mathcal{N}\to\mathcal{M}\) is a linear operator on a subspace \(\mathcal{N}\subset\mathcal{M}\) and \(\Phi:\mathcal{M}\to\mathbb{R}\) is a positive subadditive functional. Estimates for functionals in the both cases of periodic and non-periodic functions are given. Jackson type theorems belong to the obtained results. The method developed in the paper has also the advantage that it leads to actually sharp or relatively small constants.
