This paper is concerned with an initial-boundary value problem for the Navier-Stokes equations of incompressible viscous flow in a three- dimensional exterior domain with time-dependent boundary. More precisely, the equations are studied in a noncylindrical region \(\Omega_ T= {\displaystyle {\bigcup_{0\leq t\leq T}}} \Omega(t) \times\{t\}\), where \(T>0\) and, for each \(t\in [0,T]\), \(\Omega(t)\) is the exterior of a bounded domain in \(\mathbb{R}^ 3\). Nonhomogeneous Dirichlet conditions are imposed on the (smooth) lateral boundary of \(\Omega_ T\) and at \(\infty\). Using a method of elliptic regularization developed in his earlier work [J. Fac. Sci., Univ. Tokyo, Sect. IA 32, 213-221 (1985; Zbl 0576.76028); Math. Z. 199, No. 2, 153-170 (1988; Zbl 0697.76033)], the author establishes the global existence of weak (Hopf-type) solutions satisfying an energy inequality. He also proves a local-in-time regularity and uniqueness result.
