Let \(L\) be a restricted Lie algebra over a finite field \(\mathbb F_q, q=p^k\), \(a_n(L)\) be the cardinality of the set of \(p\)-subalgebras \(H\) in \(L\) such that \(\dim L/H=n\). \(L\) has polynomial \(p\)-subalgebra growth (PSG) if \(a_n(L)\) grows polynomially with respect to \(q^n\). In the paper finitely generated restricted Lie algebras with PSG are investigated. The authors mention that their study was motivated by results of A. Lubotzky, A. Mann, D. Segal, A. Shalev on groups and profinite groups with polynomial subgroup growth. At first, the authors prove (Theorem A) that \(a_n(L)\) is finite for any finitely generated restricted Lie algebra \(L\) over a finite field. The main result of the paper (Theorem B) states that the lower central series of a finitely generated restricted Lie algebra \(L\) over a finite field \(F\) with PSG stabilises after a finite number of steps determined by the degree of the growth of \(L\). Let \(d(L)\) be the minimal cardinality of a set of generators of a restricted Lie algebra \(L\). The supremum of the set of \(d(H)\), where \(H\) runs through all finitely generated \(p\)-subalgebras in \(L\), is named the \(p\)-subalgebra rank of \(L\) (or simply rank of \(L\)). According to Theorem C for a residually nilpotent finitely generated restricted Lie algebra over a finite field the following conditions are equivalent: (1) \(L\) has PSG; (2) \(L\) is of finite rank; (3) \(L\) is centre-by-(finite-dimensional); (4) \(L\) is nilpotent. Theorem C is applied to the restricted Lie algebra \(\mathcal L_p(G)\) of the group \(G\). Let \(G_{\widehat p}\) be a pro-\(p\) completion of \(G\). It is proved (Theorem D) that \(\mathcal L_p(G)\) has polynomial \(p\)-subalgebra growth if and only if \(G_{\widehat p}\) has polynomial subgroup growth. It must be mentioned that the techniques developed in the paper yield the explicit bounds.
