The paper deals with the busy period for (i) the M/G/1 queue with impatient customers, i.e. only customers whose waiting times do not exceed a given bound \(k\) enter the queue (equivalently if the work load is less than or equal to \(k\) at their arrival) and (ii) the finite dam with Poisson arrivals, also called an M/G/1 queue with uniformly bounded (by \(k\)) virtual waiting time. For both models the authors obtain Laplace transforms for the busy period by deriving an integro-differential equation (on the basis of Kolmogorov's backward equation) and constructing a renewal type equation (Wiener-Hopf type).
