The authors establish an analogue of the Sobolev critical exponent for the inclusion \(V^p(a) \hookrightarrow L^q(b),\) where \(a\) and \(b \) are the following weight functions \[ \begin{cases} a,b\;\text{ are\;measurable\;and\;positive\;in\;} (0,R), & a\in L^1_{\text{ loc}(0,R)},\quad b\in L^1(0,R),\cr a^{1-p'}\in L^1(r,R)\;\text{ for\;every}\;r\in (0,R), & a^{1-p'}\notin L^1(0,R), p'={p\over p-1},\end{cases} \] and \(V^p(a)\) and \(L^q(b)\) are weighted Sobolev and Lebesgue spaces, respectively. The obtained result is used in the study existence of radial solutions to the problem with weights \[ \begin{cases} -\text{ div}(\tilde a(| x| )| \nabla u| ^{p-2}\nabla u)=\tilde b (| x| )| u| ^{q-2}u &\text{ in}\;\Omega\subset {\mathbb R}^N,\cr u=0 &\text{ on}\;\partial\Omega,\end{cases} \] where \(\Omega\) is a ball, \(1<p<q,\) and \(\tilde a(| x| )=| x| ^{1-N}a(| x| ),\) \(\tilde b(| x| )=| x| ^{1-N}b(| x| ).\) It is studied the interplay between \(q\) and a suitable critical exponent and its consequences for the existence and nonexistence of positive solutions of the above problem.
