A Gibbs measure \(\mu\) on a subshift is defined by the relation \[ 0<C_ 1\leq \frac{\mu([x_ 0,...,x_{n-1}])} {\exp(-nP+S_ n\phi(x))} \leq C_ 2<\infty \;(x=(x_ k)_{k\geq 0}\in \Sigma), \] \(\Sigma\) a topologically mixing one-sided subshift of finite type over a finite symbol set A with shift transformation S, \(\phi\) a continuous function on \(\Sigma\), \(S_ n\phi(x)= \phi(x)+ \phi(S(x))+...+ \phi(S^{n-1}(x)),\;P\in {\mathbb{R}}.\) It is shown that these measures exist on other subshifts than those of finite type or factors thereof. Some properties of these measures are studied, for example their uniqueness as an equilibrium state or their probabilistic mixing properties.
