We characterize the set of pointwise multipliers on bmo\({}_{\phi}({\mathbb{R}}^ n)\), which generalizes the corresponding theorem by \textit{S. Janson} in the torus case [Ark. Mat. 14, 189-196 (1976; Zbl 0341.43005)]. To be more precise, let \(\phi\) (r) be a nondecreasing concave function on the positive real line, and \[ w(x,r)=\phi (r)/(|\int^{1}_{r}\phi (t)t^{-1} dt| +\int^{2+| x|}_{1}\phi (t)t^{-1} dt). \] A locally integrable function f on the n-dimensional Euclidean space \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) is said to belong to \(bmo_{\phi}\) if \[ | M(f,I(0,1))| +\sup_{I(a,r)}MO(f,I(a,r))/\phi (r)<+\infty, \] where I(a,r) is the cube whose center is a and whose edges have length r and are parallel to the coordinate axes, and where M(f,I) is the integral mean of f over I and MO(f,I) is the integral mean of \(| f(x)-M(f,I)|.\) Then the main result is the following: A function g(x) is a pointwise multiplier on \(bmo_{\phi}\), (i.e. \(gf\in bmo_{\phi}\) always if \(f\in bmo_{\phi})\) if and only if g is a bounded function and satisfies \(\sup_{I(a,r)}MO(f,I(a,r))/w(a,r)<\infty.\) Some other related results and examples are given.
