This paper is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of the solution of the following semilinear Volterra diffusion equation \(\partial u/\partial t=\Delta u +(a-bu-f*u)u\) in a bounded domain under the Neumann boundary condition with nonnegative initial data. This equation is associated with population dynamics. The author investigates the following two important cases \(f(t)=(\alpha/T)\exp(-t/T)\), \(T>0\), \(\alpha>0\); \(f(t)-(\alpha t/T^ 2)\exp(-t/T)\), \(T>0\), \(0<\alpha<8b\), in detail. He establishes that the solution satisfies \(\| u(t,.)-u_ \infty\|_ \infty=0(\exp\{- (\nu_ f-\varepsilon)t\})\) as \(t\to\infty\) for any \(0<\varepsilon<\nu_ f\) where \(u_ \infty=a/(b+\alpha)\) is the equilibrium and \(-\nu_ f\) is the supremum of the real parts of the characteristic values of the associated characteristic problem. Very precise estimates of the retarded resolvent are required.
