The property that a bounded function on a group can have a unique mean value is discussed for amenable and non-amenable groups. For non-amenable groups which contain a non-abelian free group, it is shown that the class of functions which have a unique mean value and the class of functions which average to a constant have bad behavior of various kinds. Also included are some characterizations of amenability in terms of properties of the bounded functions on the group, like having a unique mean value and averaging to a constant.
