On the condition numbers of large semi-definite Toeplitz matrices (Q1307575)

The authors determine asymptotic estimates for the condition numbers \[ K(T_n(a))=\|T_n(a)\|\|T_n^{-1}(a)\| \] of large \(n\times n\) Toeplitz matrices \(T_n(a)\), \(a\in L_\infty\) and \(\text{Re} a\geq 0\) almost everywhere. Several classes of symbols \(a\) for which \(K(T_n(a))\) increases like \((\log n)^\alpha\), \(n^\alpha\) or even \(e^{\alpha n}\) are described.
