For a finite group of Lie type we study the reduction modulo \(p\) of certain Deligne-Lusztig characters whose weights are located ``deep inside'' an alcove wall for the affine Weyl group relative to \(p\). ``Deep inside'' here means that the weight is far away from any other alcove wall. Such a character typically is the sum of two ordinary characters, a regular character and a semisimple one. We prove a correspondence in the decomposition behaviour for factors with \(p\)-singular highest weight between the Deligne-Lusztig character and an induced representation of the Frobenius kernel of the underlying algebraic group. The result is similar to Jantzen's study of the generic case. Our method of proof yields his results. It is also shown that the semisimple character contains only composition factors with \(p\)-regular highest weight.
