    By a known theorem of Eneström-Kakeya, if \(a_ n\geq a_{n- 1}\geq\cdots\geq a_ 0> 0\) then the polynomial \(\sum^ n_{k=0} a_ k z^ k\) does not vanish in \(| z|> 1\). In this paper the authors extend the above result by showing that if \(t^ n a_ n\leq t^{n-1} a_{n-1}\leq\cdots\leq t^{\lambda+1} a_{\lambda+1}\leq t^ \lambda a_ \lambda\geq t^{\lambda-1} a_{\lambda-1}\geq \cdots\geq ta_ 1\geq a_ 0\) for some \(t> 0\) and \(0< \lambda\leq n\), then the polynomial \(\sum^ n_{k=0} a_ k z^ k\) has all its zeros in the disk \(| z|\geq t| a_ n|^{-1}\{(2a_ \lambda t^{\lambda- n}- a_ n)+ t^{-n}(| a_ 0|- a_ 0)\}\). For related results see also the first author and \textit{N. K. Govil} [J. Approximation Theory 42, 239-244 (1984; Zbl 0547.41006)].
