The authors propose a method for constructing a polyhedral surface model, with the data coming from a given range image. First, their method extracts certain characteristics, mainly the surface discontinuities of type \(C^ 0\) and \(C^ 1\) and the extrema of the surface-curvature, from the given image data. Then a triangulation-based surface approximation of the data is constructed, which in particular is able to embed the previously extracted characteristica; the approximation scheme is an adaptive one in the sense that an initially rough approximation is iteratively refined only at those locations, where the approximation still does not meet the desired accuracy. A large number of figures illustrates the new found method.
