Consider the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem for the biharmonic operator \(\Delta^2\) in the rectangle \(R_h=[0,h]\times[0,1]\): \(\Delta^2f=\mu f\), \(f=\partial f/\partial n=0\) on \(\partial R_h\). The author proves the following asymptotics of the first eigenvalue \(\mu_1(h)\) as \(h\to\infty\): \(\mu_1(h)=c^4+2dc^2\pi^2h^{-2}+O(h^{-3})\), where \(c\) and \(d\) are absolute constants. In addition, it is proved that \(|f^-_1|/|f_1|=O(h^{-1/2})\), where \(f^-_1\) is the negative part of the ground state \(f_1\) and \(|.|\) stands for the \(L^2\)-norm.
