Let \(U\) be a finite-dimensional subspace of periodic, real-valued and continuous functions. The author is interested in unicity subspaces, i.e., such \(U\) that every periodic and continuous function admits a unique best \(L^1\)-approximation from \(U\). In the similar problem for functions on \({[a,b]}\) the property \(A\), introduced by \textit{H. Strauss} [J. Approximation Theory 41, 297-308 (1984; Zbl 0543.41029)], gives a characterization of the unicity subspaces. The author defines the property \(A_{\text{per}}\) for subspaces of periodic functions and shows that this property gives a characterization of unicity subspaces. Some examples of unicity subspaces are presented: spaces of trigonometric polynomials, of piecing together Haar systems and of periodic polynomial splines.
