Let \(R\) be a ring of projective dimension at most 1, and let \(D\) be an \(R\)-module. The author constructs an \(R\)-module \(G\) containing \(D\) such that \(\text{Ext}(D,G)=0=\text{Ext}(G,G)\). A module is called \(\lambda\)-projective if every \(<\lambda\)-generated submodule is contained in a projective submodule. She shows that if \(R\) is hereditary and \(D\) is \(\lambda\)-projective for some infinite cardinal \(\lambda\), then \(G\) is also \(\lambda\)-projective. Thus the result lies in the active research area of finding non-trivial splitters, that is, non-projective modules \(G\) satisfying \(\text{Ext}(G,G)=0\).
