Modelling adjacent free flow and porous media flow is an important topic in partial differential equations with a wide range of applications, for instance, transport of drugs via blood flow in vessels, transport of pollutants via surface groundwater flow, etc. The problem is stated as a system of partial differential equations, with the free flow governed by the Stokes equations combined with the porous media flow described by Darcy equations. Suitable coupling conditions on the common interface between the free flow and porous media flow subdomains are analyzed and mathematically justified. The monograph gives a nice introduction to the Stokes-Darcy equations. New material includes existence and uniqueness results, and the Robin-Robin formulation of the coupled problem with emphasis on the complete and rigorous analysis of the nonsmooth interface and boundary conditions. An equivalence between the coupled Stokes-Darcy formulation and the Neumann-Neumann problem is derived. The book also treats numerical analysis of iterative schemes which are focused on the effects of small viscosity and hydraulic conductivity. The new algorithms are supported by computational studies comprising an example motivated by a geoscientific application. The book contains eight parts devoted to properties of Sobolev spaces, traces, Laplace equation, weak formulations of the Stokes-Darcy equations, iterative algorithms, and computational results. A symbolic computation to verify numerical examples supplements the book. The entire book is clearly written, employs a modern notation, and with no doubt can be recommended to all researchers in this interesting field.
