Let \(\Omega\) be a bounded smooth domain in \(\mathbb{R}^N\) (\(N\geq 2\)), and let \(p>1\) and \(q\in (0,1)\). The authors study the behavior as \(q\rightarrow 0^+\) of the minimum \(\lambda_q(\Omega)\) of the functional \[ I(v) := \int_\Omega |\nabla v|^pdx, \] over the set of all functions \(v\in W_0^{1,p}(\Omega)\), such that \(\displaystyle{\int_\Omega |v|^qdx=1}\). More precisely, the authors prove that: \(1)\) there exists the finite limit \ \(\displaystyle{\lim_{q\rightarrow 0^+}\lambda_q(\Omega)|\Omega|^\frac{p}{q}}=:\mu(\Omega)\), \ with \(\mu(\Omega)>0\); \(2)\) the number \(\mu(\Omega)\) is the minimum of the functional \(I\) over the set of all functions \(v\in W_0^{1,p}(\Omega)\) such that \[ \lim_{q\rightarrow 0^+}\left(|\Omega|^{-1}\int_\Omega |v|^qdx\right)^\frac{1}{q}=1. \] In particular, using property \(2)\), the authors deduce that \(\mu(\Omega)^{-1}\) is the best constant for the log-Sobolev inequality \[ \text{exp}\left(\frac{1}{|\Omega|}\int_\Omega \log |v|^pdx\right)\leq C\int_\Omega |\nabla v|^p, \;\;v\in W_0^{1,p}(\Omega). \] The authors also show that the minimum \(\mu(\Omega)\) is obtained by a positive function \(u\in W_0^{1,2}(\Omega)\), which is Hölderian in \(\overline{\Omega}\) and satisfies \[ \text{div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u)=\mu(\Omega)|\Omega|^{-1}u^{-1} \;\;\text{in} \;\Omega, \;\;\;\text{and} \;\;\int_\Omega \log u\,dx=0. \] The above results are proved by means of variational methods, \(L^\infty\)-estimates, and comparison principles.
