    This book summarizes an approach to the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect developed by the authors and their collaborators. The main insight of this approach is that one should focus on the correlations between fermions. An antisymmetric fermionic wave function in the lowest Landau level can always be splitted into a Jastrow factor (which accounts for the antisymmetry) and a symmetric correlation factor which encodes the nontrivial correlations of FQH states. The authors show that the correlation factor must satisfy a number of constraints that can be analyzed in a diagrammatic way. The first chapter briefly reviews the Laughlin state and Jain's composite fermion states, then introduces a method to probe the correlations in these states. The second chapter provides a comprehensive and mathematically rigorous treatment of the correlation diagrams. This book is particularly useful to researchers who are interested in this diagrammatic approach, and could also be a useful reference for readers with an interest in the FQH effect.
