Here, by using the theory of operator matrices, the author studies the existence and uniqueness of classical solutions to the following nonautonomous \(n\)th-order Cauchy problem in a Banach space \(E\): \[ u^{(n+1)}(t)=A(t)u^{(n)}(t)+B_{1}(t)u^{(n-1)}(t)+\cdots+B_{n}(t)u(t)+f(t),\;0\leq t\leq T, \] \[ u^{(i)}(0)=x_{i}\in E,\quad i=0,1,\dots,n, \] where \(A(t)\) is a closed operator in \(E\) with \(D(A(t))\equiv D\) and \(D(B_{i}(t))\supset D,\forall\;1\leq i\leq n.\) His method works both in the hyperbolic and parabolic cases, as well as in the homogeneous and inhomogeneous cases. His results extend previous results by \textit{F. Neubrander} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 295, 257-290 (1986; Zbl 0589.34004)], \textit{E. Obrecht} [Czech. Math. J. 36, 210-222 (1986; Zbl 0618.35054); and J. Math. Anal. Appl. 125, 508-530 (1987; Zbl 0645.34052)], and \textit{H. Oka} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 124, 3143-3150 (1996; Zbl 0880.34064)] who proved the existence and uniqueness of solutions in the autonomous case, under rather strong parabolic hypotheses in the nonautonomous case, and lastly for second-order equations under certain hyperbolic conditions.
