This is a very good and useful textbook concerning mathematical methods for biologists. The main idea is to present mathematical concepts starting from different biological problems. This new third edition, for the second edition from 2001 see Zbl 0985.92001, contains a chapter on linear algebra, as well as a lot of exercises with solutions. The first chapter deals with the description of foundations of mathematical modelling. The second presents mathematical notions for evolution theory: quantitative methods, qualitative methods, and the use of integral theory. The third chapter gives a description of the past states with more than a single independent variable. Further, the reconstruction of functions having a pair of number and fitting aspects for linear data are considered. The last chapter deals with the interaction of two populations. At the end we find the solutions for the 77 exercises and 40 references. The book contains mathematical theory useful for biologists, in order to solve specific experimental problems.
