Let \(q(z)\) be any rational period function of weight \(2k\) for \(\Gamma_0^+(2)\). Then in the paper under review, the author characterizes \(q(z)\) such that its poles lie only in \(\mathbb{Q} \cup \{ \infty \}\). More precisely, he proves that the Mellin transform attached with \(q(z)\) has an analytic continuation to the entire \(s\)-plane except for possible simple poles at some rational integers, satisfies some functional equation is bounded on each certain truncated strip. He also shows that the converse is true. The case for \(\Gamma_0^+(3)\) can be treated with the same method. The proof is based on calculations with modular integrals and Mellin transforms. This paper is an extension of \textit{M. I. Knopp}'s earlier work in [Glasg. Math. J. 22, 185--197 (1981; Zbl 0459.10017)] to higher levels.
