Main result: Let E be a rank 2 vector bundle on a smooth projective surface. Assume (i) \(c_ i(E)^ 2>0\) and \((\det (E))^ m\) is generated by global sections for some \(m>0.\) (ii) E is semistable with respect to det(E). Then \(E\otimes (\det (E))^{\alpha}\) is ample almost everywhere for all \(\alpha\in {\mathbb{Q}}\) satisfying \(\alpha >(\sqrt{-\Delta (E)/c_ 1(E)^ 2}-1)\) where \(\Delta (E)=c_ 1(E)^ 2-4c_ 2(E).\) The concept ``ample almost everywhere'' was introduced by \textit{Y. Miyaoka} in Classification of algebraic and analytic manifolds, Proc. Symp. Katata/Jap. 1982, Prog. Math. 39, 281-301 (1983; Zbl 0584.14022). The notion of semistability used here is slightly more general then usual.
