For \(\varepsilon > 0\) the authors consider the Schrödinger operator \[ L^\varepsilon := -\varepsilon^2 (d^2/ds^2) + V, \quad -\infty < s < \infty, \] where the potential \(V(s)\) is nonnegative, singular at \(s = 0\) (that is \(V(0) = 0\)), and satisfies certain assumptions (H) which are fulfilled by large classes of potentials. They derive sharp (upper and lower) bounds for the fundamental solution (i.e. the Green's function) of \(L^\varepsilon\). They also derive lower bounds for the first \(N\) \(L_2{\mathbb R}\)-eigenvalues of \(L^\varepsilon\) (\(N\) can be as large as one wishes by choosing \(\varepsilon\) sufficiently small). The paper's approach is a rigorous alternative to WKB approximation.
