Let \(M^ m\) be an n-dimensional compact minimal submanifold in a unit sphere \(S^{n+p}\) of dimension \(n+p\). As the main result of the present paper, the author proves that if the length square \(\| \sigma \|^ 2\) of the second fundamental form of \(M^ n\) satisfies \(\| \sigma \|^ 2\leq n/(1+\sqrt{(n-1)/2n})\) everywhere, then \(M^ n\) is either totally geodesic or a Veronese surface in \(S^ 4\). The author also gives a solution to the pinching problem for the Ricci curvature of a 3- dimensional compact minimal submanifold \(M^ 3\) in \(S^{3+p}\). In fact he shows if the Ricci curvature of \(M^ 3\) is not less than \(\min \{(97+73\sqrt{3})/184\), (11p-8)/(8p-4)\(\}\), then \(M^ 3\) is totally geodesic.
