A conjecture of Margulis states that a discrete subgroup of a semisimple Lie group, which is generated by lattices in two opposite unipotent subgroups, must be arithmetic provided the lattices are irreducible and the real rank of the Lie group is at least 2. The present paper is concerned with the \(S\)-arithmetic version of this conjecture for a finite set of places \(S\) including the infinite place. For \(S= \{\infty\}\) the result melts down to an earlier result of the author proving the above conjecture in the case that the Lie group is simple real split and not locally isomorphic to \(\text{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})\) [J. Algebra 203, 621-676 (1998; Zbl 0907.22014)]. The main theorem is proved by using the above-mentioned result over the reals applied to some projection and using the Margulis superrigidity theorem to get an arithmetic group.
