The main result of the paper under review is the following statement: Theorem. Let \(\Bbbk\) be a field and \(A=\bigoplus_{i\in\mathbb{Z}}A_i\) be a \(\mathbb{Z}\)-graded \(\Bbbk\)-algebra. Assume that there exists \(l\in\mathbb{N}\) such that for every \(m,n\in\mathbb{N}\) and all \(a\in A_n\) we have \(\dim\{b\in A_m\mid ab=ba\}<l\). Let \(a=\sum_ia_i\in A\) be such that for the maximal \(j\) with \(a_j\neq 0\) we have \(j>0\) and \(a_j\) is not invertible in \(A\). Then for every \(b\in A\) such that \(ab=ba\), the elements \(a\) and \(b\) are algebraically dependent. The authors also define a generalization of the notion of generalized Weyl algebras of rank one and investigate centralizers and algebraic dependence of commuting elements in such algebras.
