    The author considers the Navier-Stokes equations on a two-dimensional compact manifold \(M\) without boundary, i.e. \[ \partial_ t u+\nabla_ u u-\nu \Delta u=-\nabla p+f, \qquad \text{div u}=0, \qquad u_{| t=0}=u_ 0, \] where \(\Delta\) denotes the Laplace-de Rham operator. He proves the existence of a global attractor \({\mathcal A}\) and gives the following bounds for the Hausdorff and fractal dimension of \({\mathcal A}\): \[ \dim_ H{\mathcal A}\leq c_ 1 G^{2\over 3} (1+\ln G)^{1\over 3}+n+1, \qquad \dim_ F{\mathcal A}\leq c_ 2G^{2\over 3}(1+\ln G)^{1\over 3}+2n+2, \] where \(c_ 1\), \(c_ 2\) depend on the shape of \(M\), \(n\) is the first Betti number and \(G\) denotes the generalized Grashof number. For the important case that \(M\) is the unit sphere \(S^ 2\) rotating around its axis with constant angular velocity the author gives explicit estimates for the occuring constants.
