Let \(U\) be an open subset of \(\mathbb{R}^{2n}\) endowed with the standard symplectic structure \(\omega _0\). A smooth embedding \(\phi :U\to (M,\omega )\) into a symplectic space is called symplectic if \(\phi ^*\omega =\omega _0.\) The author studies the rigidity (the largest number \(\lambda\) such that \((\lambda U,\omega _0)\) symplectically embeds into \((M,\omega )\)) and flexibility (the smallest ball \(B^{2n}(A)\) into which \(U\) symplectically embeds) of symplectic embeddings in the model case in which the domain is a symplectic ellipsoid \(E(r_1,\dots , r_n).\) It is proved that under the condition \(r_n^2\leq 2r_1^2\) the symplectic ellipsoid \(E(r_1,\dots , r_n)\) with radii \(r_1\leq \dots \leq r_n\) does not symplectically embed into a ball of radius strictly smaller than \(r_n.\) Then he uses a symplectic folding to show that this condition is sharp. He also proves that any connected symplectic 4-manifold of finite volume can be asymptotically filled with skinny ellipsoids, i.e. \(\lim_{a\to \infty }\sup_{\lambda }{\text{Vol}(\lambda E(\pi ,\dots , \pi,a))\over \text{Vol}(M,\omega )}=1.\)
