This paper is a first one in the series of papers written by the same authors, where several types of ``defects'' are discussed. All these papers are finally summarized in a recent monograph of the authors [``Defects of properties in mathematics. Qualitative characterizations'' (2002; Zbl 1035.00001)]. The paper itself deals with the defect of additivity of fuzzy measures, i.e., of monotone set functions vanishing in the empty set. Fuzzy measures were introduced just to model situations which cannot be described by additive set functions (for example, when interaction of single elements should be taken into account), and thus the study of their defect of additivity is debatable. The authors show some general properties of introduced defects (of order \(n\), defect of countable additivity), and then give better estimations of these defects for special types of fuzzy measures, such as \(\lambda\)-measures of Sugeno (see, e.g., [\textit{Z. Wang} and \textit{G. J. Klir}, ``Fuzzy measure theory'' (1992; Zbl 0812.28010)]). Some possible applications, especially for approximate calculation of the fuzzy integrals are shown.
