This book is a study on stability and stabilization of switched linear systems. The first chapter introduces to this kind of systems, provides examples, and addresses well-posedness. The next chapter presents mathematical tools necessary for the sequel: background in linear algebra for the needed geometric systems theory, Lie-algebraic methods, graphs. Chapter three is devoted to stabilizing switching laws for uncontrolled systems. A section considers periodic strategies, and robustness and discretization are addressed. Chapter four studies controllable and observable (by duality) subspaces in the geometric framework in this context. Normal forms provide an entry to the stabilization problem of the next chapter. Controllability under sampling is addressed, too. Chapter five investigates output feedback stabilization (for hybrid systems with control inputs) by using the normal forms of the previous chapter. The discrete case is examined too. The general situation is still open. The sixth chapter tackles optimization issues. Here, the authors tell us that two cases have to be distinguished: optimizing the switching law, optimizing the input. The mixed case is of course dealt with too. Some results are obtained for simultaneously triangularisable systems, a very special case. The last chapter gives a summary and an exposition of some open problems. The authors write on page 264 at the end of the book: ``The field of switched linear systems is largely unexploited'' and later ``\dots most fundamental issues are still in need of further exploration''. This exploration is anyway of interest for researchers in the area of hybrid systems.
