The Hamilton's variational principle of classical mechanics is transformed by using intermediate variable into a variational principle with two kinds of variables. Again, this principle is generalized by introducing yet another intermediate variable. The new principle so obtained is called a variational principle with three kinds of variables. An application is given to dynamic elasticity where the introduction of intermediate variables in variational principles is known for long time. As a result, the authors obtain a type of Hellinger-Reissner variational principle.
