In this note we prove the following extension of III, Theorem 8.6, in ''Compact semitopological semigroups: An intrinsic theory'' [Lect. Notes Math. 1079 (1984)]. Theorem. Let \((G^ w,\phi_ G)\) be the weak almost periodic compactification of a connected locally compact topological group G. Then the following assertions are equivalent: (i) \(G^ w\) is a regular semigroup. (ii) \(G^ w\) is a semilattice of groups. (iii) \(G^ w\) is a semilattice of groups with finitely many idempotents. (iv) \(G^ w\) has only finitely many idempotents. (v) \(G^ w\) has at most countably many idempotents. (vi) For every closed normal subgroup N of G the center of G/N is compact. (vii) If \(G_ 1\) is a locally compact group and \(\alpha\) : \(G\to G_ 1\) is a continuous homomorphism then \(\alpha\) (G) is closed in \(G_ 1.\) (viii) If \((H^ w,\phi_ H)\) is the weak almost periodic compactification of a semigroup H then the compactification \((G^ w\times H^ w\), \(\phi_ G\times \phi_ H)\) is equivalent to the weak almost periodic compactification of \(G\times H\). (In short: \((G\times H)^ w=G^ w\times H^ w.)\) (ix) Let \(({\mathbb{N}}^ w,\phi_{{\mathbb{N}}})\) be the weak almost periodic compactification of \({\mathbb{N}}\). Then the weak almost periodic compactification of \(G\times {\mathbb{N}}\) is equivalent to \((G^ w\times {\mathbb{N}}^ w\), \(\phi_ G\times \phi_{{\mathbb{N}}})\).
