Let \(C_{2\pi}\) denote the class of real continuous functions with period \(2\pi\) and let \(E^*_ n(f)\) be the best approximation to \(f\in C_{2\pi}\) by trigonometric polynomials of degree \(\leq n.\) Suppose \(S_ n(f;x)\) denotes the n-th partial sum of the Fourier series of f(x) and let \(\| f\| =\max_{-\infty <x<\infty}| f(x)|.\) In this note the author answers the following problem in negative: Does there exist a positive constant M such that for every \(f\in C_{2\pi}\) with monotone Fourier coefficients \(\| f-S_ n(f)\| \leq ME^*_ n(f),\quad n=1,2,...?\) He shows that there exists a function \(f\in C_{2\pi}\) with strongly monotone coefficients such that \(\limsup_{n\to \infty}[\| f-S_ n(f)\| /(\log n)E^*_ n(f)]>0\).
