Let \(S\) be a semigroup with zero \(0_S\) and let \(I_\lambda\) be a set of cardinality \(\lambda\geq 1\). The set \(B_\lambda(S)=(I_{\lambda}\times S\times I_\lambda)\cup\{0\}\) equipped with certain binary operation is called the `Brandt \(\lambda\)-extension of the semigroup \(S\)'. The semigroup \(B^0_\lambda(S)=B_\lambda(S)/\mathcal J\) where \(\mathcal J=\{0\}\cup\{(\alpha,0_S,\beta)\mid\alpha,\beta\in I_\lambda\}\), is called the `Brandt \(\lambda^0\)-extension of the semigroup \(S\)'. Under certain assumption, homomorphisms between Brandt \(\lambda^0\)-extensions of monoids are described. The authors construct a category \(\mathcal B\) and a full representative functor from \(\mathcal B\) into the category of all Brandt \(\lambda^0\)-extensions of monoids with zeros and central idempotents having an additional property \(\mathcal B^*\). The latter result is applied to some subcategories of \(\mathcal B\) (based on inverse, on Clifford and on some other classes of monoids). The final section of the article transfers the results obtained earlier to the case of topological monoids.
